  • Kolkata: The Election Commission has sent an SIR notice to former Kolkata Police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee and his son Ranajit over voters' list discrepancies. This came after high-profile figures like Amartya Sen received similar notices.

Describing the situation as "bad", Mukherjee said, "I was the IG of south Bengal in 2002, holding charge of this very district and the surrounding districts, including South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Murshidabad and Nadia. This was my zone. I lived in my own zone and yet my name is missing. Now, I have to produce documents to prove I am not a Bangladeshi?"

Mukherjee said there were initially four voters in his family, including his wife and sons. "My elder son lives in Vancouver and my wife is no more. I asked for my elder son's and my wife's names to be struck off. But I saw that my younger son's name and mine did not appear on the list in 2002. I can't understand how this happened," he said.

Mukherjee now lives in Salt Lake. "Before this, I was a voter from Bodyguard Lines and used to cast my vote at St Thomas' School. I lived in that house for seven-eight years. I left my govt quarters and moved to Salt Lake in 2001. I found that the names of those living in the houses next to mine in Salt Lake were on the 2002 voters' list, but my name was missing. I checked the Bodyguard Lines list and found my name wasn't there either in 2002. That means my name didn't appear on any list in 2002. But it is not my fault that my name went missing from the 2002 list," Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee said many elections have taken place since 2002 and he has always voted. "If my name wasn't there in 2002, how did it appear on the voters' list after that? Everything seems odd. My son contested the last Parliamentary elections from Burdwan and all his documents were scrutinised then. While he has now been called for a hearing on Jan 14, I have been asked to go on Jan 15."
