• Wellington fire guts 50 stalls, freezes woollens biz

  • Kolkata: Fire engulfed a portion of the woollens market at Wellington Square, gutting at least 50 stalls of woollens on Thursday around 4.40 pm.

Traders from Bhutan, Nepal, Darjeeling, Shimla, and other places had been selling woollens in the market for nearly five decades. No one was inside the Square when the fire broke out. Cops started a probe. Traders, who were otherwise doing a good business this year, may have incurred a loss of around some lakhs. Though cops learnt prima facie that the fire might have started from garbage, fire brigade officials said exact cause was yet to be ascertained.

Four fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was put out by 6.40 pm. Traffic was shut on Nirmal Chunder Street for a while. Traffic on Lenin Sarani near Wellington crossing slowed down. Traders were upset and uncertain if they would be able to resume business anytime soon this season.
