KOLKATA: Security was stepped up at Kolkata’s Lok Bhavan late on Thursday after West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose received a threatening email warning that he would be attacked, officials said.
According to a statement from the Governor’s office, the email said “will blast him”, prompting an immediate security review.
The threat was reported to the Union Home Ministry due to its seriousness, following which additional protective measures were put in place.
The Governor, who has Z-plus security cover, is now being protected through coordinated deployment by the West Bengal Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Senior security officials held a late-night meeting to assess the situation and strengthen existing arrangements.Officials said similar threat messages had been received in the past. An investigation into the latest email is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
The incident triggered political reactions, with BJP leader Amit Malviya criticising the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
“Welcome to Mamata Banerjee's regime, where even the Governor is not safe. Law and order has completely collapsed in West Bengal,” he said.
He further alleged, “The Home Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is busy snatching incriminating files from the ED in order to protect a private firm accused of coal smuggling and money laundering. Mamata Banerjee is an unmitigated disaster.”
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in the state. Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the office of political consultancy firm I-PAC while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was conducting searches linked to an alleged coal smuggling case.
Questioning the ED’s actions, the chief minister accused the agency of seizing party-related materials, including hard disks, candidate lists and strategic documents, and alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was misusing central agencies.
