  • Howrah: A 30-year-old cancer patient, Sk Allauddin, was allegedly beaten to death on charges of mobile theft on Thursday near Andul Road in Bharpara, under Sankrail Police Station limits in Howrah, police sources said.

Allauddin of Panchpara was allegedly caught snatching a mobile phone on Thursday morning. Local people claimed an agitated crowd tied him to a lamppost and beat him severely, after which he became unwell, police sources said. He was then left in a field in a bloodied state, the sources said. In the morning, police patrolling in the area rescued him and took him to Howrah District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His relatives alleged that the police informed them of the incident on Thursday afternoon. After receiving a call from the Botanical Garden Police Station, they went to Howrah Hospital and identified his battered body. The deceased's father, Sk. Aminuddin, stated that his son had undergone surgery on his face due to cancer two-and-a-half months ago at SSKM Hospital. He said Allauddin had recently been indulging in various addictions and left home last night. His father lodged a complaint. Probe is on.
