Kolkata: Kolkata Police arrested two more people in connection with a cyber fraud case in which a Netaji Nagar resident was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.8 crore through a "digital arrest" scam, officers said.
The accused, identified as Debtanu Sarkar (25), and Sourav Biswas (27), were apprehended from Hanskhali in Nadia district on Wednesday night following a raid based on confidential inputs, police said. Both are residents of the Hanskhali area.
According to police, the case relates to an incident reported four months ago in which fraudsters allegedly placed the victim under a so-called digital arrest and extracted money from him. A formal complaint was lodged at Netaji Nagar Police Station in Sept last year, after which an investigation was initiated. Police said the latest arrests were made as part of the ongoing probe into the money trail and the network involved.
A Kolkata Police team conducted the operation in the jurisdiction of Hanskhali police station and arrested the two men around 8.30 pm, officers said. During searches, police seized two mobile phones, six ATM cards, eight bank passbooks and cheque books, along with several documents described as suspicious.
Police also recovered a hardware wallet, a device resembling a pen drive used to store cryptocurrency credentials, officials said. Cryptocurrency worth about $3,800, estimated at around Rs 3.41 lakh, was seized from the device, police added.
