Arambagh police have arrested the main accused along with two others in connection with the assault on two journalists inside the Kalipur College campus a few days ago.
The incident took place during a protest at Kalipur College, when the principal was being surrounded by the students. Two journalists, Tuhin Das and Asik Hossain, were covering the protest and taking photographs when they were allegedly attacked without warning by a youth identified as Hasan Chowdhury along with his associates. The journalists were reportedly beaten brutally within the college premises.
Both journalists sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital. They later lodged a complaint at the Arambagh police station.
Despite several days of the incident, no arrests were initially made, leading to growing concern among journalists in the area. Hasan Chowdhury, a resident of the Kotulpur police station area, is reportedly a civic volunteer. Although a former student of the college, he is now an outsider but allegedly continues to act as a students’ union leader.
The delay in arresting the accused sparked strong reactions from members of the Arambagh District Press Club, who expressed serious concerns over the safety and security of journalists while covering events. The president, secretary and several members of the Press Club repeatedly demanded the immediate arrest of those involved.
Following sustained pressure, police have now arrested Sheikh Hasan Chowdhury, identified as the main accused in the case, along with two others in connection with the assault.
