  • Kolkata: A power trip at the Green Line's Sector V station, the terminal station on the metro corridor, around 2 pm on Friday disrupted services, causing inconvenience to commuters. Services resumed around 5 pm.

The power snag subsequently delayed services on the Green Line due to bunching effect, technically referring to rakes being stuck one after another on the line.

The snag led to delaying of trains. When the services resumed, the rakes were crowded, leading commuters to struggle while boarding the coaches.

For a change, it was not the Blue (North-South) Line or the Shahid Khudiram-Dakshineswar corridor, but the Green (East-West Metro) Line that faced the disruption. "Sector V station was teeming with people when I reached the station to catch the 4.05 pm like I usually do," said Himani Agarwal, a New Town resident, a private firm employee. "There was no sign of the train. Finally, when it did arrive, almost all the seats got taken, even at this terminal station at a non-peak hour," Agarwal said, adding that throughout her journey to Esplanade, the train doors had problems shutting.

Sources said the Green Line, equipped with advanced communication-based train control (CBTC) signalling and automatic platform screen doors and gates, failed to sync because of crowding. The ordeal of the prolonged wait for trains continued till 5 pm.

"When I tried to board a Howrah-bound train at 4.45 pm, train doors and platform screen doors faced trouble closing. A RPF personnel came rushing to stop several people from boarding the train so that doors could shut," said Prosenjit Chakraborty, an executive and resident of Howrah Maidan.
