  • Kolkata: Police registered a case against the owner of a three-storey residential house on Samsul Huda Road in the Lohapool area in Park Circus after chunks of concrete collapsed early on Monday, leading to the death of a senior citizen and injury to three others living on the ground floor.

The case was registered following a complaint on Jan 7 by KMC, which after an investigation with Karaya cops, found it was the result of the owner's failure to maintain the premises. The KMC buildings department had urged that the complaint be treated as an FIR, alleging sheer negligence and irresponsibility of the owner.

The deceased, Rabia Khatun (61), along with three members of her family, were sleeping on the ground floor, when a portion of the ceiling crashed down on them around 3 am. Police said Khatun suffered severe head injuries and was declared dead at a nearby hospital. The injured were her granddaughter, Ayesha Khatun (9), grandson Umar (16) and her brother, Wahid Abdul (55). CNMCH officials said while Ayesha's injuries were minor, the others were under treatment.

Neighbours claimed despite repeated requests, the owner never repaired the dilapidated house.
