  • Jalpaiguri: A farmer's son, studying in the fourth year in information technology department at Jalpaiguri Govt Engineering College, has landed an annual package of Rs 1 crore, a pay packet that till now only Jadavpur University students would receive among state engineering colleges.

Suman Bera, a resident of Barbashi village in Kharagpur II Block in West Midnapore, secured the offer from American business and employment-oriented social networking service LinkedIn. His place of posting is in Bengaluru, and he is likely to join the office in July after his final results are out in June. "My father has grown too old to farm any longer. This offer has breathed a new lease of life in him. I am happy," said an elated Bera.

A student of the 2022-2026 batch, Bera was described by the college as "always meritorious". "Our students bag packages of Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh. But the offer that Bera has received seems surreal," said college principal Amitabha Roy.

Born to Achal Kumar Bera, Bera completed his Class X from Barbashi High School in 2020 with 96.28% and Class XII from Midnapore Collegiate School with 94.8%. That very year, he cracked WBJEE with a rank of just over 2,400. "In 2024, LinkedIn floated an online opening for an internship, which I had applied for. I got selected through an online test. I worked at the company's Bengaluru office for three months from May to July last year. This offer came to me a couple of days ago. I am thrilled, indeed," Bera told TOI.

In another placement, a final-year computer science student, Tania Banerjee, bagged an offer of Rs 56 lakh per annum from Microsoft and will be posted in Hyderabad.

Aditya Kumar Samanta, HOD, IT, expressed immense pride: "This is a milestone for our institution," Samanta said.
