  • Bongaon/Rampurhat: A 50-year-old man, Balai Das, attempted suicide on Friday in Beledanga, Gopalnagar, allegedly out of fear of the SIR hearing on Friday and died at RG Kar Hospital on Saturday, while a 75-year-old retired high school teacher, Kanchan Kumar Mondal, died after he fell ill at the Rampurhat-1 Block office during an SIR hearing on Saturday.

Das received a summon for the hearing because his name was missing from the 2002 voter list. His family said he was terrified about the outcome of the hearing, which led him to consume poison. He was taken to Bongaon Subdivision Hospital and transferred to RG Kar Hospital in critical condition, where he died on Saturday.

In the other case, Mondal, a resident of ward 13 under Rampurhat Municipality area, went to the hearing venue accompanied by his family members. His daughter is a state govt employee. Witnesses said Mondal fell ill while he was waiting for his turn. After he collapsed, the BDO offered his car to transport him to Rampurhat hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
