Howrah: Railway police recovered 165 Indian flapshell turtles early on Saturday from Howrah Railway Station's Old Complex. No arrests have been made yet but RPF is reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible. The forest dept sent the sent the turtles to the Garchumuk Rescue Centre.
RPF and Howrah GRP sources said, on Friday afternoon, officers from the RPF, GRPS and CIB conducted a covert surveillance operation on the Howrah station platform. Around 2.50 pm, they spotted a few bags in a suspicious state near the CTI outdoor office beside platform number 12.
On searching the bags, officers found live turtles wrapped in nets. Despite waiting for a long time, no one came forward to claim ownership of the bags, so no arrest was made. The turtles were later seized following the GRP's standard procedure, and the entire process was recorded on video.
