Placing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls at the centre of its 2026 Assembly election campaign, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of panicking over a clean voter list and attempting to undermine constitutional institutions to retain power.
Addressing a rally in Siliguri, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the Trinamul Congress had come to power promising the restoration of democracy after the CPI-M era but had instead presided over what he described as its complete erosion.
Alleging that the Opposition was being silenced through intimidation and violence, Bhattacharya claimed that dissenting voices were being attacked and threatened to create a climate of fear. “This is not democracy,” he said, accusing the Chief Minister of showing open disregard for the Constitution, the judiciary and institutional norms.
