  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to expedite the construction of the Hrishikesh Park drainage pumping station with a view to giving relief to the citizens of some of the traditionally low-lying pockets in north-central Kolkata.

According to a KMC sewerage and drainage department official, the contractor engaged in the construction of the drainage pumping station was asked to wrap up the construction process in the next 3-4 months. "We hope the drainage pumping station will get ready before this monsoon. We passed the necessary instructions to the construction firm. Once it starts functioning, we will be able to give relief to residents of waterlogging-prone areas from inundation," said a KMC sewerage and drainage department official.

According to the plan, the new drainage pumping station will come up with advanced technology and will have at least 8 heavy-duty pumps to flush out storm water from large parts of the north and central Kolkata neighbourhoods.

According to a KMC drainage department official, the new pumping station at Hrishikesh Park will be set up with pipelines designed to carry storm water in larger volumes. "At present, the drainage pumping station fails to flush out storm water because the design of the station was faulty. The new drainage pumping station will not only have improved and powerful pumps but also a much bigger pipeline network that will be instrumental in drying up the waterlogged pockets faster," said a KMC official.

According to the design of the pumping station, after flushing out storm water, the drainage pipeline will carry the storm water from major waterlogging pockets such as Amherst Street, Sukea Street, Muktarambabu Street, Thanthania, Chittaranjan Avenue (parts), Bidhan Sarani, Vivekananda Road and APC Roy Road. The storm water will finally be discharged into the Beliaghata outfall canal, said a KMC drainage department senior official.
