  • Kolkata: A nine-month-old male Siberian husky, Tyson, swallowed an innerwear and it was removed successfully through non-invasive endoscopic surgery at Animal Health Pathology Lab (AHPL), a city base veterinary lab in south Kolkata. The dog was doing well after the procedure.

Tyson belonged to Nikita Biswas of Bhadreshwar. Biswas said the incident happened on the rooftop of the family's Hooghly residence, where garments were lying under sun for drying up. "The incident happened in front of us and before we could do anything, Tyson swallowed the innerwear almost instantly," recalls Biswas.

Rikita Biswas, Nikita's elder sister, said, "We rushed to a local veterinary doctor and from there to another vet surgeon in Salt Lake who referred us to a newly opened veterinary path laboratory at Deshapriya Park."

Suprodip Mondal, performing veterinary endoscopic & laparoscopic surgeon at AHPL, said, "Removing the innerwear from the dog's stomach was highly challenging, as it was firmly adhered to the gastric wall. Traditionally, such cases often require invasive gastric surgery. However, the veterinary team opted for a minimally invasive endoscopic approach." "Using advanced endoscopic techniques with an alligator forceps, the foreign body was successfully retrieved without the need for invasive gastric surgery, thereby avoiding potential postoperative complications. The dog recovered immediately after the procedure and has since returned to a normal, healthy life," he added.

Akash Dey, another member of the Biswas family, said,"It was almost 36 hours after the innerwear was swallowed before we reached AHPL and we were very worried as we were told the extraction process could be more difficult if the object entered the small intestine from the stomach." The endoscopy for Tyson cost around Rs 14,000.

Protip Chakraborty, founder and CEO of the lab, said, "In the past few months there were many instances where dogs gobbled foreign bodies like balls, dolls, scrub pads, keys, fish bones and even safety pins and mezrab and we managed to remove the objects through endoscopy, but innerwear is something new in the list."

"We lost Tyson's father Sultan, a month back suddenly and knew that a delay in surgery could lead to another disaster," said Biswas.
