Kolkata: MBA evening students of Institute of Business Management (IBM), which is affiliated to Jadavpur University, protested, demanding jobs during the convocation of the institute on Monday. The students, who came to receive their degrees, alleged that they approached authorities multiple times to look into placements, but they never paid heed.
The institute conferred MBA degrees to 27 evening students and BBA degrees to 17 day students from 2022-2025 batch.
A student said, "We repeatedly approached higher authorities with requests about placement. There are students who are not working professionals and need jobs. But they brushed us off with responses like ‘we're looking into it' and ‘we'll see what we can do'."
An MBA student said, "I took a loan to study here. During admission, we were told that we would get a job with a minimum package of Rs 6 lakh per annum. But today we are standing on convocation stage without any job. Even those who are working took admission for better opportunities. If I don't get a job, I won't be able to repay my loan."
The course fee for MBA degree is Rs 4,10,025. Director Debasis Chanda said, "Some students in our evening batch are working professionals who attend classes in the evening after their day jobs, which is why we thoughtfully designed the programme to support this group. We did not commit anything about placement. But at the same time, providing jobs is our priority, and we are trying to put a proper placement process in place."
JU VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said, "JU does not have any responsibility in this matter."
