SSC to send HS asst teacher offer letters from Jan last week
Times of India | 13 January 2026
Kolkata: The West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC) is likely to start sending recommendation letters to higher secondary assistant teacher candidates from the last week of Jan. The recruitment panel is expected to be published before Jan 22. The Supreme Court had extended the deadline for completing the teachers' recruitment process till Aug 31.
A total of 17,209 assistant teachers at the secondary and higher secondary levels in state-run schools lost their jobs after the SC's April 3 order cancelled the entire 2016 panel, citing irregularities in the recruitment process.
Although the fresh recruitment process began under SC guidelines, it was delayed due to multiple court cases. The earlier order required the process to be completed by Dec 31.
The Supreme Court extended the deadline to the end of Aug after the state sought relaxation.
Meanwhile, Group C and D staff appointed from the 2016 panel, who also lost their jobs under the same order, are still waiting for dates for their written tests.
A school education department official said, "The interviews for assistant teacher recruitment in 35 subjects at the HS level have just been completed. The final panel will be published around Jan 20-21, as there will be holidays after that. We expect recommendation letters to be dispatched after the holidays, and the appointment process will begin before Feb."
The list of shortlisted candidates for the secondary level was published in Dec. An SSC official said the verification process for secondary-level appointments will begin immediately after the higher secondary recommendation letters are issued. There are 23,519 vacant posts at the secondary level.
A dismissed teacher who appeared for the interview said, "We are more concerned about those who lost their jobs and were not called for the interview. The state should do something for them."
