  • Kolkata: The mercury see-saw continued in the city on Tuesday. While the day temperature dipped slightly, the night temperature rose. However, with both the maximum and minimum temperatures staying below the normal mark, the cold feeling remained intact. The Met office predicted a slight dip in night temperature by Wednesday, while the day temperature is expected to hover around the same mark as that of Tuesday.

While at 13.3 degrees on Tuesday the minimum was merely 0.5 degrees below normal, Met office expects it to drop further to hover around 12 degrees by Wednesday and remain there for the next few days. Apart from early mornings, the sky is likely to be clear of fog for the rest of the day. Met said that even as the chill, that wrapped Kolkata under its spell for over a week in early Jan may be missing, the city will continue to experience the cold feeling for now.

The minimum temperature dipped to a record low in 13 years for Jan on Jan 6, when it plummeted to 10.2 degrees in Kolkata. Fuelled by a strong north-westerly wind and low cloud hanging over Kolkata's sky, the maximum temperature also plunged to the season's lowest of 18 degrees, a whopping 6.7 notches below the normal mark on the same day.

Even as the gradual rise began from the next day, the minimum remained well below the normal mark before its abrupt jump to 15 degrees on Sunday, breaching the normal mark after 17 days. However, in the past two days, it dipped below the normal mark once again.
