Kolkata: Three Punjab-based members of the Dony Bal Bambiha gang who were arrested near Howrah railway station late on Sunday night were tracked after investigators traced a money trail that led from Punjab to UPI accounts in Kolkata and Howrah, police said.
The arrested men were identified as Karan Pathak, Tarandeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh, all residents of Punjab. Investigators now assigned specific roles to each of them in the Dec 15 killing of kabaddi player Kanwar Digvijay Singh, also known as Rana Balachauria, during a match in Mohali.
Police said Karan was the shooter who opened fire on the player, Tarandeep rode the motorcycle used in the attack, and Akashdeep arranged accommodation for the accused after the murder.
According to investigators, the attackers approached Balachauria on a motorcycle under the pretext of taking a selfie and then fired 4 to 5 bullets at close range. The player died on the spot, police said.
Two days after the killing, Punjab Police shot dead the alleged mastermind, Harpinder Singh, in an encounter. Police earlier arrested another accused, Aishdeep Singh, at Delhi airport.
