    Times of India | 14 January 2026
  • Kolkata: The EC is set to deploy 294 senior micro-observers for the SIR exercise in Bengal at Assembly constituency levels. They will be appointed from among central govt officers of Group A level or above and equivalent officers of central PSUs, including banks.

"Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal on Monday wrote to his counterparts in Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand, requesting for names of officers among whom he will appoint senior micro-observers," an official said. Bengal will be the first state in India to get senior micro-observers for SIR.

EC is yet to specify senior micro-observers' roles but an official said they would work closely with EROs. "Senior micro-observers will not be at hearings. They will observe EROs at the Assembly constituency level, and submit the findings to CEO/EROs/special electoral roll observers," he said. —Kaushik Pradhan
