  • Kolkata: Days before PM Narendra Modi's scheduled Jan 17 rally at Malda, Bengal BJP netas on Tuesday started sending invitation letters to locals. Senior state BJP netas have also started campaigns in north Bengal to showcase centrally sponsored projects.

On Tuesday, Malda North MP Khagen Murmu reached out to voters, urging them to join Modi's rally. "We started the programme from Sahapur area, where PM Modi will address the rally. People are suffering under the misgovernance of Trinamool, and Modi will address the ‘Parivartan Sankalpa' rally to address them. We hope that lakhs will join the rally," he said.

While Modi is scheduled to flag off a number of trains on the day, he is also likely to announce several other projects for north Bengal, BJP netas said. "There will be a bunch of new trains flagged off, and Alipurduar will be one of the beneficiaries. Some of these trains will run to southern India. These trains will also boost tourism in north Bengal. Local produce like mangoes or handicrafts will find new markets," said Manoj Tigga, Alipurduar BJP MP.

Tigga said that a number of projects in north Bengal, like the Kamakhyaguri flyover, were stuck owing to non-cooperation from state govt. "There are projects in which state govt has to participate and bear a portion of the project cost. After NDA came to office, Centre started bearing the entire financial burden. However, the land has to be provided by state govt, and it is unwilling to do that," he said.

Tigga said that a super-specialty hospital on railway premises will be inaugurated soon in Alipurduar.
