  • Kolkata: "Delhi wanted to deprive Bengal, but we don't live on their mercy. Our govt has shown what Atmanirbhar Bangla is," said TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday after the first screening of a movie documenting multiple state welfare schemes at Nandan II.

The script of the 55-minute documentary named ‘Lakshmi Elo Ghore', featuring popular Tollywood actors, was conceived and vetted by Banerjee. Directed by MLA and filmmaker Raj Chakraborty, the film follows the journey of a young widow, portrayed by Subhashree Ganguly, who struggles to survive after her husband's death, primarily due to a lack of awareness about welfare schemes.

The narrative traces how she became financially stable and self-reliant with the help of various govt initiatives. The documentary will be released on YouTube and screened at major party programmes, Banerjee said. The screening was attended by several TMC MPs, MLAs and prominent Tollywood actors.

Banerjee said: "Only seven or eight schemes have been mentioned in the documentary, but there are more in existence. The movie showed that many people are unaware of various schemes offered by the state or the Centre. Irrespective of political differences, you must inform people of schemes that can change their lives."

The film highlights flagship schemes such as Lakshmir Bhandar, Anandadhara, Banglar Bari, Kanyashree and Rupashree, and also touches upon the issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. "We are not against SIR, but we are against the unplanned way in which it is being done," he added.

Chakraborty said the film was shot over just 15 days at Bantala. "The film is extremely close to my heart as it depicts the social welfare schemes of our state in one movie. I believe this was much needed," he said.
