• ‘Did nothing for Nandigram’: Abhishek hits out at Suvendu on his home turf

  • Nandigram/Kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday criticised Bengal leader of opposition and Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari on his home turf, accusing him of having "had done nothing" for the constituency over the past five years.

Speaking after inaugurating two ‘Sebaashray' model health camps in Nandigram blocks I and II, Banerjee said Adhikari had failed to deliver basic infrastructure since he switched sides.

"When Adhikari was a TMC MLA, he used to publish a report card on the work he had done. He hasn't published it in the past five years because he has nothing to show for," said Banerjee.

"He (Adhikari) boasts of having beaten Mamata Banerjee by 1,956 votes, but has he helped 19 people in the past five years, did he build five roads, did he set up two drinking water projects or homes for even six people," Banerjee added.

Citing the death of a migrant worker from the region in Kerala, Banerjee said it was Trinamool that stepped in to bring back the worker's mortal remains while the local MLA remained "conspicuously absent". "Even when people from his (Adhikari's) constituency were in danger in another state, basic support — expected from an elected representative — was not provided," Banerjee alleged.

Banerjee's inauguration of Sebaashray camps was brimming with political symbolism, with family members of those who had died during Nandigram agitation lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Local Trinamool members alleged BJP had tried to disrupt the event by tearing down banners and intimidating families of the deceased to force them to withdraw from the event.
