  • Kolkata: Two men hired recently to paint a house in the Park Street area were arrested in connection with the theft of gold ornaments and cash worth about Rs 6 lakh from a flat inside Ambassador Apartments, police said.

The case was registered on Friday at Park Street PS after a complaint alleged that unknown persons committed theft. According to the plaint, the theft occurred on or before 5 pm on Jan 13. The stolen items listed in the FIR included 2 gold chains weighing about 20 grams and 25 grams, a gold pendant studded with ruby and emerald, and cash amounting to Rs 25,000.

Police said the 2 arrested men were engaged for painting work on the premises and were taken into custody during the investigation. Officers did not immediately disclose whether any of the stolen property was recovered.

"We studied CCTV footage and used leads from the contractor, based on which we carried out the arrests within hours of receiving the complaint," said an officer from South Division.

In the wake of the arrests, police issued an advisory urging homeowners and residents to tighten security when contractors and paint workers are allowed into occupied properties.
