Kolkata: Plan carefully if you are stepping out of your residence for central Kolkata or Howrah, especially if you are coming from the south.
The Vidyasagar Setu will remain shut to traffic from 5 am to 1 pm on Sunday for the replacement of stay and holding-down cables and bearings, being done by HRBC on the bridge. In addition, there will be major diversions around Maidan for the Kolkata Police Safe Drive Save Life Half Marathon to be held on the same morning.
The Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners, which maintains the bridge, has to overhaul the 33-year-old structure by replacing two different types of cables: the stay and holding-down cables. Sunday's traffic closure is aimed at completing a part of this task, senior HRBC engineers said.
Kolkata Police will restrict movement of all types of vehicles on Vidyasagar Setu during these six hours in the morning. Additional diversions through arterial roads will be implemented as required.
Non-goods traffic bound for Kolkata via Vidyasagar Setu will be routed through Howrah Bridge, Nivedita Setu or Vivekananda Setu. Go
There will be diversions for the Kolkata Police Half Marathon, too. Kolkata Traffic Police will restrict the movement of all goods vehicles on key city roads from 4 am to 12 noon. Multiple Maidan-area roads will be closed to vehicular traffic under a phased schedule.
"We will be depending on AJC Bose Road-Strand Road, APC Road-MG Road and EM Bypass-VIP Road-Nivedita Setu for all Howrah Station-related movements," said an officer.
