  • Kolkata: Cops on Friday widened their search for Sanjit Kumar, the brother of 22-year-old Pushpa Kumari, after investigators learned she was in a year-long relationship with one of his friends and that the brother strongly opposed it.

Cops claimed the family members told them Sanjit pressured Pushpa to end the relationship after he discovered it, and later severed ties with the friend. Investigators are now examining whether the dispute escalated into violence and whether Sanjit fled after the killing. Police are also trying to trace the friend, who was not located since the death, an officer said.

Pushpa was found unresponsive on Wednesday at the family's rented home on Shivtala Lane in Narkeldanga, where they lived for about two years, neighbours said. Residents reported seeing Sanjit enter the house earlier in the day and later leave the room in a hurry. When neighbours called out to Pushpa and received no response, they entered and found her lying under a blanket, they said. There were marks on her neck, according to initial observations recorded by police.
