  • Jalpaiguri: A 33-year-old man from Cooch Behar district was allegedly killed in Assam with Trinamool claiming he was targeted for being a Bengali-speaking migrant.

The deceased, identified as Himankar Paul, was a resident of Kursamari village under the Sitalkuchi block. According to family members, Paul had left for Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday to look for employment but decided to return home after failing to secure a job. He boarded a bus on Saturday for the return journey.

On Sunday, Assam Police informed Paul's family that his body had been found near a railway track at Guhapur. Family members alleged that Paul had an altercation with the bus driver, following which he was killed.

Four members of Paul's family have travelled to Assam to bring his body back. No formal complaint by the deceased's family members has been lodged so far.

Trinamool alleged that Paul was targeted in the BJP-governed state because he was a Bengali.

BJP, meanwhile, accused Trinamool Congress of playing dirty ethnic politics.

BJP netas claimed that Trinamool had remained silent when a similar incident occurred in Jharkhand, which is governed by TMC's ally JMM.
