Kolkata: Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim on Wednesday asked senior KMC officers to recover outstanding property taxes, which have run into several hundred crores of rupees. The mayor said the tax dues were a cause for worry, considering the rising expenses of the civic body. After holding a meeting with senior KMC officials, the mayor had asked officers in both north and south Kolkata divisions to ‘find means, including legal steps, to collect the outstanding property tax.'
Last year, KMC had earned over Rs 1,000 crore, from property tax collections alone in the last fiscal (2024-25). In 2025-26 budget—estimated at Rs Rs 5,639.6 crore, KMC has a projected deficit of around Rs 114.7 crore. Last fiscal, KMC had earned Rs 5,054.5 crore and spent Rs 5,166.5 crore. tnn
