  • Kolkata/Jalpaiguri: Two more deaths related to the SIR process were reported from Bengal in the past 24 hours — one from North 24 Parganas and the other from Jalpaiguri.

In North 24 Parganas, a 70-year-old man allegedly died of a heart attack hours before he and four members of his family were scheduled to appear for an SIR hearing on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Sahar Ali Mondal, was a resident of Purba Madartala village in Haroa.

According to family members, Mondal received a notice directing him and his children to appear before the SIR authorities with the required documents. "Since my father received the notice, he was under severe mental stress. He feared deportation to Bangladesh," said Saira Bibi, Mondal's daughter.

In Jalpaiguri, Makbul Haque (61), a resident of Garalbari Gram Panchayat, received an SIR notice asking him to appear for a hearing next Thursday. Family members claimed that Haque suffered from acute anxiety since receiving the notice. On Tuesday, he allegedly died of a heart attack. tnn
