  • Kolkata: A special NIA court in Kolkata on Wednesday sentenced 33-year-old Saeed Mohammad Idris from Hyderabad, also known as Munna, to 10 years in prison and imposed a fine in a sedition case linked to a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) module.

The case stems from the March 2020 arrest of college student Tania Parvin from Baduria in North 24 Parganas. Parvin was initially arrested by the Bengal STF before NIA took over the investigation. It was after questioning Parvin that the central agency nabbed Idris in Hyderabad.

Investigators alleged that Parvin was influenced by the LeT and used social media to create groups aimed at promoting jihadist ideology. The NIA alleged she built and managed an online recruitment module from Baduria. "Following Parvin's interrogation, the NIA arrested an alleged LeT operative identified as Altaf from Bandipora in Jammu and Kashmir and later detained Idris. Another accused, Ayesha, also known as Ayesha Burhan and Ayesha Siddiqui, was also arrested in the case," the agency said.

In 2020, the NIA filed a charge sheet and later submitted a supplementary charge sheet naming Parvin, Idris and Ayesha. The agency invoked multiple provisions, including sections of the UAPA.

Idris is the first among the accused in the case to be sentenced.
