  • Kolkata: Cops from the Port division arrested two persons—Shabaz Ali and Sahil Ahmed—in connection with the theft of gold jewellery worth Rs 65 lakh and Rs 50,000 cash from a locked flat in the Metiabruz area last month. Police said the two had fled to Karnataka after committing the crime but had returned to the city, when they were caught.

The stolen ornaments have been recovered from the accused.

The arrests were made following a complaint lodged by Ekbalpore resident Nazra Begum (33) at the Metiabruz Police Station, where a case of theft and house break-in was registered on Dec 20. Nazra, her husband Md Miraj Alam and the family live in one flat and they have another flat in Metiabruz, which is unoccupied. Nazra alleged that unknown people stole the gold and cash, which were kept inside a pink suitcase kept at their Metiabruz home.

According to investigators, the theft occurred between Dec 17 and Dec 20 last year. During the probe, police found that the building's electricity supply was disconnected by CESC on Dec 16 as bills were not paid and was restored on Dec 19. Investigators said the accused must have taken advantage of the power outage to carry out the theft.

Police said the accused entered the apartment by opening the padlock as well as the door latches using special keys, a method intended to avoid leaving obvious signs and to reduce the chances of forensic detection. Investigators also said the accused used WhatsApp calls to communicate and changed more than five vehicles around the time of the crime to conceal their identities and movements.

The case was cracked, using local source network technical support.
