  • Kolkata: A murder case was registered at the Sarsuna Police Station after a trader was found hanging inside his rented home in Sarsuna on Tuesday evening and his sister accused his wife and his brother-in-law of killing him.

The deceased, Sunny Singh, who earlier lived in Ekbalpore, had moved to Sarsuna Ram Road, EWS, six months ago.

Police said they first received an alert on 100 around 6.55 pm on Tuesday. On reaching the location, they found Sunny lying unresponsive on the floor, his head on his wife Punita's lap. Kallol Hirak, a neighbour, told police that around 6.50 pm, Punita called him and some others, seeking their help, saying she and her daughter, Tanisha, had been locked inside their bedroom. Once "rescued", Punita, with the neighbours, went to the entrance and unlocked the door to find Sunny hanging from a fan with a dupatta, police said.

Sunny was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital, where he was declared brought dead at 7.45 pm.

Officers said no external injury was visible on him, apart from a non-continuous ligature mark around the neck. A post-mortem revealed the death was due to hanging and was ante-mortem.

The couple reportedly often had fights and Punita had lodged a police complaint against Sunny in Dec.

Cops filed a murder case following a complaint by Sunny's sister, Sangita Shaw, against Punita and her brother, Rakesh Paswan.
