R-Day flyers told to reach airport early for checks

Kolkata: Security at Kolkata airport has been significantly stepped up ahead of Republic Day, prompting airport authorities and airlines to advise passengers to reach the airport well before their scheduled departures since there would be enhanced checks and a surge in holiday traffic.
The heightened security measures came into effect earlier this week, with authorities introducing two layers of screening — at the airport entry point and before passengers enter the boarding gates. Security has also been reinforced at terminal entrances and during primary passenger screening, officials said.
Airport authorities said the intensified checks have added an average waiting time of 15-20 minutes. Airlines advised domestic passengers to reach the airport at least three hours before departure and internati-onal flyers to report four hours in advance.
"We are on high alert and all agencies are working in close coordination to ensure the safety of passengers and airport infrastructure," an official said.
