  • Kolkata: A man was killed, two persons were injured, and a child managed to escape unhurt when a private car mounted the pavement on CIT Road in front of Manicktala Housing Estate near the DVC building on Friday morning, police said.

The accident occurred around 9.15 am, when the pavement was bustling with people on Saraswati Puja morning. The car, belonging to a Bagmari resident, was travelling from south to north towards Ultadanga. Police said the vehicle, driven by a hired driver, was carrying the owner's grandson to a relative's residence.

According to cops, the car was being driven in a rash and negligent manner, and began to swerve as it approached the spot.

It hit a scooterette rider and jumped on to the pavement, hitting two pedestrians before coming to a halt after crashing into a roadside stall.

The pedestrian who died was identified as Md Moidul Islam (23), a resident of Goalpota, Chowhata in North 24 Parganas. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the on-duty emergency medical officer declared him dead.

The injured included Jamaluddin Molla (32) from Haroa and Soumita Sankas Das (64) from Maniktala Main Road. Molla was treated at ESI Hospital, Maniktala, while Das was taken to Apollo Hospital. Their injuries were described as not serious.

Police said the child who was in the car had a narrow escape and was rescued from the vehicle after the crash.

The driver was detained at the spot and later arrested. Cops initiated legal proceedings and informed the Fatal Squad of Traffic Police, which took up the probe. During questioning, the accused told cops that he was taking neurological medicines and alleged he lost control of the vehicle due to a neurological disorder.

Police said they are verifying his claims and examining if any mechanical failure contributed to the crash. Officers are checking the vehicle's speed and reviewing CCTV footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events. Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the mechanical inspection, CCTV analysis, and other evidence collected during the investigation.

The crash caused brief disruption along the busy CIT Road but there was no agitation at the spot.
