  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police rescued a minor girl from Tollygunge, who was abducted to Champaran in Bihar, and arrested a woman, described as "a leader of an orchestra group". The accused are part of a trafficking gang that targets girls participating in neighbourhood cultural events in south Kolkata.

The minor's mother lodged a complaint at the Tollygunge PS on Thursday afternoon, when she told police that an orchestra group—New Nisha Orchestra Group—had recently performed in their locality, when her daughter became acquainted with the group's singer, exchanged phone numbers and stayed in touch with her. Police said the singer promised her a job, called the girl to the Esplanade area and told her not to carry a mobile.

But police got the singer's number from the minor mother's phone though they found it switched off. But cops tracked the number's WhatsApp activities that led them to Motihari in Bihar.

A KP team left for Bihar on Thursday and after searches at multiple locations, they managed to identify the place, where the girl was kept. In the operation that followed, the team rescued the girl, along with several other minors.

Cops from the Tollygunge PS alerted Chiraiya Police Station in Bihar, following which a team from the local police station reached the spot. The singer was detained and was arrested on Friday night.

Police said the trafficking gang called itself New Nisha Orchestra Group, using the name of the original one to add credibility, and used performances at local events to scout for minors and assess their financial vulnerability before trafficking them to Bihar. Lalbazar has alerted Child Welfare Commission.
