Kolkata: Vidyasagar Setu will remain closed to all vehicular traffic for 16 hours on Sunday, the second consecutive Sunday that the bridge will stay shut.
This time, the closure on both flanks would be effective between 5 am and 9 pm for repair and rehabilitation work, including replacement of stay and holding-down cables and bearings, officials said.
HRBC, which maintains the bridge, is undertaking an overhaul of the 33-year-old structure. Senior HRBC engineers said the work involved replacing two types of cables—stay cables and holding-down cables—and that Sunday's shutdown was intended to complete a portion of the task.
Police said several more shutdowns would be required in the next three-four months. Kolkata Police said traffic would be diverted through alternative routes.
