Biker crushed under truck on Bypass; woman dies after being hit by bike

Kolkata: Two persons died in two accidents in the city, while a third person was stated to be in a serious condition.
The first accident took place on EM Bypass near Goutam's Dhaba around 10.20 pm on Friday, when a motorcyclist was crushed under the wheels of a stone-laden truck. Police said the motorcycle, Sanjoy Das (40), travelling from Ultadanga towards Bypass, rammed into a pillar of the Ultadanga bridge and in the impact, both Das and his pillion rider, Somnath Das (24), were hurled to the ground. A truck coming from behind ran them over.
Sanjoy, a resident of Canal Circular Road, was taken to RG Kar, where he was declared brought dead, police said. Somnath, also from Canal Circular Road, was first admitted to RG Kar in a criticial condition and then, shifted to NRS. Police said neither had a helmet on.
The truck was seized and the driver taken to Maniktala Police Station.
The second accident took place on Sadananda Road near the popular snacks shop, ‘Apanjan'. The victim, Jharna Chakraborty (50), a resident of Satish Mukherjee Road, was walking on the road when a biker hit her and sped away, said police. Chakraborty was admitted to SSKM, where she was declared dead later. The case was taken up by the Fatal Squad from the Kalighat PS and cops are looking for the bike rider.
