• RG Kar-probe cops to get R-Day honours

  • Kolkata: Two senior police officers in the rank of commissioner and joint director from two separate units belonging to the state and the central cadres, who had supervised the RG Kar rape-murder probe last year, will be awarded for their services by the Union govt on Republic Day.

    One of them is the present Barrackpore Police commissioner, Murlidhar Sharma. He was the detective department chief when Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy a day after the incident. Sharma will get the Meritorious Service Medal. A 2005-batch IPS, Sharma handled multiple high-profile cases both in Kolkata and Barrackpore.

    The other officer to be awarded is V Chandrasekhar, an important member of the RG Kar probe team on behalf of CBI. He was the CBI joint director who supervised the high-profile murder probe, and is among 31 officers of the central agency to be awarded police medals on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day.

    A 2000-batch IPS officer from Gujarat cadre, Chandrasekhar, will be awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service, according to the list issued on Sunday. As joint director of the agency, he ensured a quick charge sheet, leading to the conviction of the main accused within months.

    In Bengal, DC Debabrata Sarkar and deputy SP Ram Kumar Mondal will receive the President's Medal. Overall, Bengal will get 22 medals.

    Among other prominent recipients is DIG Murshidabad range Syed Waqar Raza. In the probe into the Samserganj riots last year, an SIT led by him ensured 11 involved in the murder of a father-son duo received the death sentence in a local court in a short period.

    DC Nima Naurbi Bhutia, ACP Abdullah Sana, ACP Amit Biswass, DSP Vidyasagar Choubey, inspector Rajesh Kumar Singh, inspector Aman Raza, ACP Dibyendu Chatterjee, ACP Pradeep Khara, inspector Subhash Bandyopadhyay, inspector Malay Sanyal, SI Suryamani Chhetri, inspector Amit Halder, ASI Ghanteshwar Mandal, constable Chandrani Ghosh, ASI Sujit Samanta, SI Ritesh Kumar Singh, ASI Kalyan Marjit, and ASI Kanchan Das will also be honoured for their remarkable contribution in maintaining law and order, crime control, and public service.
