  • Jalpaiguri: A 57-year-old man died at Tekatuli in Jalpaiguri's Maynagiri after suffering a cardiac arrest on Sunday, with his family blaming anxiety related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls for the death.

The deceased, Nibas Sarkar, was anxious ever since his son, Anik, received an SIR notice, the family has claimed. Nibas's name was not on the 2002 SIR list and Anik had been summoned to prove his identity.

Family members said Nibas had a cardiac arrest on Saturday night, after which he was first rushed to Maynaguri Hospital and from there to Jalpaiguri Govt Medical College and Hospital. He breathed his last Sunday morning.

"It was the tension over SIR that killed my father," said Anik. Nibas's death comes less than 24 hours after a man died of cardiac arrest in Cooch Behar's Mathabhanga.

Local Trinamool members visited Nibas' house on Sunday. Bablu Roy, the local panchayat pradhan, blamed EC for the death.
