Kolkata: Uncertainty has again emerged over the appointment of Bengal's next police chief, with Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) moving the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, challenging a Central Administrative Tribunal order directing DGP selection process in Bengal to be completed by Jan 31, when acting DGP Rajeev Kumar is set to retire.
The CAT, while hearing a petition by IPS officer Rajesh Kumar, had directed the state to send proposals to UPSC by Jan 23 and asked UPSC to convene a meeting on Jan 28, prepare a panel, and forward it to the state by Jan 29. Rajesh Kumar and another DG-rank officer, Jag Mohan, are also due to retire on Jan 31. Following the directive, the state sent a list of eight IPS officers for empanelment, including Rajeev Kumar.
Sources said UPSC approached the Delhi HC soon after receiving the list.
