Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday emphasised that the "country's peace and social harmony" was essential for economic growth and social stability, and warned against deliberate attempts to foment unrest ahead of elections.
After virtually inaugurating the renovated Sirity Mahashamshan and laying the foundation stone of a new crematorium at Doi Ghat in Watgunj, Banerjee said: "If there is peace in the country, there will be peace in one's mind, peace in the family and harmony in society. Only then will businesses flourish and the new generation will move forward with confidence."
Describing Bengal as a "large family" of diverse communities, the CM said Hindus and Muslims lived together in the state since Independence. "After Independence, some people migrated to Pakistan and Bangladesh, but those who remain belong to India and are an integral part of the nation," she said.
Banerjee cautioned that creating unnecessary conflicts with minority communities — who make up nearly 30 per cent of the population — would only lead to unrest, blockades and disruption of daily life.
Banerjee also urged people not to be provoked by attempts to incite riots before elections.
"Bengal is for all. It is the motherland and homeland for everyone who lives here," she said.
