  • Kolkata: Four goats and cash were stolen from a mutton shop in north Kolkata, prompting cops to register a theft case — a rarity they admit they haven't handled in a long while.

The shop owner reported a loss of Rs 26,000 in cash, while the value of the missing goats is estimated at over Rs 40,000.

Police are scanning footage from at least 14 CCTV cameras for leads.

The complaint was lodged by Md Imtayaz, a KC Road resident and butcher who runs Pakeeza Meat Shop on BT Road under the jurisdiction of Chitpore Police Station.

According to the complaint, Imtayaz closed the shop around 9 pm on the evening before the Republic Day. When he returned to reopen it at about 5.30 am on Monday, he found the shutter broken. On entering, he discovered that four goats and cash were missing.

Police said the theft is believed to have taken place between 9 pm and 5.30 am. Imtayaz told officers that unknown persons were responsible and sought legal action.

Based on the written complaint, a case has been registered at Chitpore Police Station under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against unknown miscreants. Sub-inspector M K Roy has been assigned to investigate under the instructions of the officer-in-charge.

"It has been a long time since we last registered a case involving stolen goats," an officer at Chitpore Police Station said. The cops said they are examining how the shutter was broken and are working to identify those involved.
