Siliguri: A booth-level officer from Siliguri's Dharam Nagar allegedly died by suicide by jumping into the Teesta river from Coronation Bridge near Sevoke on Thursday afternoon.
Shravan Kahar jumped from the bridge around 4 pm and his body was recovered nearly an hour later by personnel from Rambi police outpost. Police established his identity from the documents he was carrying.
According to family sources, Kahar was a primary school teacher. Local residents said Kahar reportedly faced marital issues with his wife for several years.
"Based on preliminary investigation, a case of unnatural death was registered. A probe was initiated to ascertain the exact sequence of events. We will also question his family members to understand what led him to take such a step," a senior police officer said.
The body was sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem.
