  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) water supply department on Saturday successfully completed repair and maintenance of the Garden Reach water treatment plant and necessary maintenance works at some water booster pumping stations across south Kolkata.

Water supply to vast areas of south Kolkata was suspended from 9 am on Saturday to facilitate the repair and maintenance work. Normal supply from Garden Reach will resume at 6 am on Sunday, said a KMC water supply department official.

According to the civic official, the KMC water supply department roped in over 200 workers at Garden Reach for the repair and maintenance work. Another 100 workers were engaged at different booster pumping stations for urgent maintenance work.

"We took up comprehensive repair and maintenance work at the Garden Reach water treatment plant, keeping in mind our commitment to supply adequate water during the peak of summer, when the demand for filtered water goes up. The repair and maintenance work was carried out under the supervision of experts, and the work was completed successfully. We are now ready to supply water from Garden Reach as per schedule from tomorrow morning," said a civic official.

According to a KMC official, the necessary maintenance and repair work at the booster pumping stations will pave the way for the supply of filtered water at uniform pressure to several south Kolkata neighbourhoods.

KMC water supply department sources said the supply of filtered water from the Garden Reach water treatment plant to the entire Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia was suspended. Water supply was also affected in parts of Chetla, Kalighat, Rashbehari, Kasba, Garfa, Dhakuria Golf Green, and some areas located adjacent to EM Bypass. Besides repair and installation work, the KMC water supply department also took up repair of leakages in the major pipelines and installation of high-voltage motors and electrical appliances to ensure uninterrupted supply of water during the peak of summer.

A KMC official at the Garden Reach water treatment plant said that, with the demand for potable water going up in several areas under the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt, the modernisation and maintenance work at the water plant will ensure augmented supply from the plant.

"We constructed several water reservoirs and booster pumping stations in the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt to redress the water crisis in these areas during summer. But after a successful maintenance and modernisation programme, we will be able to utilise the proper capacity of our water plants at Garden Reach," said the civic official.
