Kolkata: Kolkata Traffic Police decided to approach the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to request smoothening of the EM Bypass after a widely circulated video grab showed a woman being thrown off a bike after the biker tried to speed on an uneven surface. Sources said the accident took place close to the Satyajit Ray Metro station on the Ruby Hospital-bound flank.
"We videographed the area and sent it to KMC. We are also collecting the video and attaching it to our submission," said a traffic cop.
KMC already took up a comprehensive development plan for the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. As part of the plan, the entire length (22 km) of the arterial road will go through a special repair and relaying process. However, everyday commuters claim that the road is uneven across stretches, posing a major challenge for bikers.
According to a KMC roads department official, the department initiated a road smoothening drive for a major stretch of EM Bypass from Ruby traffic intersection to Dhalai Bridge in Garia. The smoothening work between Baghajatin rail overbridge and Dhalai Bridge is done.
After completion of the work on this stretch, the civic body will take up the stretch between Ruby intersection and Hiland Park. According to a KMC roads department official, this stretch is one of the most undulated stretches of EM Bypass and hence poses a challenge for the civic body.
