• Girl writes Madhyamik exam after suicide bid

  • Midnapore: A Madhyamik candidate, who tried to end her life by consuming poison, appeared for her Class X board exam on Tuesday from Midnapore Medical College and Hospital in West Midnapore.

    The girl reportedly consumed poison on Saturday evening after being scolded for not studying, her father said. On Monday, the day Madhyamik started, she did complain about feeling unwell before leaving for the exam but still went ahead. A student of Madpur Girls' School in Kharagpur Rural, she appeared for her first paper from her assigned centre, Mawa Ishwarchandra School. It was after she returned home after writing her first paper that her condition worsened and she was admitted to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital after she revealed that she had consumed poison.

    The family informed school authorities about it, following which the secondary education department arranged for her to appear for her Tuesday's paper from the hospital.

    Subhash Hazra, district secondary exam convener, said arrangements were made for the student to take the exam at the hospital. Suravi Gain, headmistress of Madpur Girls' School, said the school received a call on Tuesday morning that the student had been admitted and needed to sit for the test from the hospital, and that they coordinated to facilitate the process.
