  • In a major push to upgrade civic infrastructure and urban healthcare, the Krishnagar Municipality on Tuesday formally launched construction on 20 roads at a total cost of Rs 4.17 crore under the state-funded Pathashree-IV scheme, marking one of the largest single-phase road infrastructure initiatives undertaken in the town in recent years.

It also launched two new Urban Health and Wellness Centres, signalling a renewed phase of planned urban renewal in the historic town.

The inauguration was attended by minister Ujjal Biswas, district magistrate Aneesh Dasgupta, municipal administrator and SDO Sharadwati Chowdhury, senior officials of the Municipal Engineering Directorate (MED), and other civic functionaries, besides local residents.

Speaking at the event, district magistrate Aneesh Dasgupta said the Pathashree roads were being implemented entirely with state government funds, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving last-mile connectivity in municipal areas.

“Out of 27 sanctioned roads for Krishnagar Municipality, work on three has already begun earlier. Today, we are initiating construction of 20 more roads under the Pathashree project,” he said, adding that the projects would be completed in a time-bound manner so that residents could benefit at the earliest.

The district magistrate also announced that sanction for two Urban Health and Wellness Centres had been received and that their construction work was being formally initiated from the same platform. The new centres will come up at Ward No. 1 (Yogiraj Shyamacharan Lahiri Urban Health Centre) and Ward No. 24 (Dishari Urban Health Centre), strengthening primary healthcare access in densely populated neighbourhoods.

Minister Ujjal Biswas said Krishnagar was witnessing a visible transformation driven by coordinated administrative efforts and sustained government investment.

Municipal administrator and SDO Sharadwati Chowdhury provided a detailed project briefing, stating that the MED was the implementing agency for all the Pathashree-IV works, with execution under close technical supervision.

She announced that the total project cost for the 20 roads stands at Rs 4.17 crore, covering blacktop and cement concrete roads across 15 municipal wards.
