• Earthquake hits Myanmar, strong tremors felt in Kolkata and Bangladesh

  • Earthquake tremors were felt in Kolkata and other districts of West Bengal on Tuesday around 9:07 pm.

    According to initial reports, the epicentre of the earthquake was Myanmar, while tremors were also felt in Bangladesh and Indonesia. The earthquake’s intensity was measured at 6 on the Richter scale.

    People rushed out of their homes after tremors were recorded.

    Ridhita Mondol of Kakurgachi said, “ I was sitting on a chair and I suddenly felt like something was moving. I immediately rushed out of my home and stood on the road.”

    Arunava Debnath of Salt Lake said she noticed the fan swinging while having dinner. “I realised that it was an earthquake and ran outside,” she said.

    Many who were outside their home besides those sitting in offices also reported feeling tremors. Several call centres employees who work at night said they felt the tremors and rushed out of the office and waited for some time.

    Ridhita Mukherjee, an employee, said, “ I felt the tremors while sitting in office. Soon, several social media groups were abuzz with people posting ‘Did you feel the earthquake?’. I immediately ran outside my office.”

    The tremors were also felt in Howrah and Durgapur.
