Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim on Wednesday flagged off a drainage revamp project that will ensure laying of underground sewer lines across ward 127 in the next couple of years.
The project, under Kolkata Environment and Infrastructure Improvement Project (KEIIP), will bring relief to Shakuntala Park and Sarsuna residents in Behala, especially during the monsoons by preventing waterlogging.
Drainage pumping stations will also be set up to ensure storm water from the waterlogged neighbourhoods recede faster
Currently, Shakuntala Park and Sarsuna have surface drains. These neighbourhoods get inundated even when the area receives moderate rainfall.
"Though the KEIIP had taken up drainage revamp plan in some parts of Behala, large parts of Shakuntala Park and Sarsuna were left behind. Now, we have commenced a drainage upgrade plan exclusively for the residents of ward 127 that include these two major neighbourhoods," said Hakim, while inaugurating the project.
Arijit Das, a resident of Sarsuna expressed hope that the project would maintain its deadline and offer them real relief during monsoons. "We have been going through extraordinary pains. Hope the drainage revamp project will be completed in time and give us relief as soon as possible," said Das.
