  • Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that the state govt will conduct a survey of gig workers in the state to provide them with better social security measures.

"Gig workers don't have any social security. They don't have any security of life. We have a social security scheme for them. We will give them a chance to apply on our portal. A survey will follow. Gig workers can get Rs 2 lakh assistance for their daughters' marriage. They can get assistance when they fall ill. Provision for compensation is also there in case of death," she said while addressing a press conference at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Biswajit Raha, a gig worker in Kolkata, said, "It is good that the state government is looking into our issues. Our wages are still low and commission is minimal. Moreover, there is no insurance scheme for us in case of any accident. It will be of immense help if the state govt can look into that," he said.
