• Get ready for winter’s last spell, temp to dip in Kolkata

  • Kolkata: The mercury is set to dip by around two degrees by Saturday in the city, giving Kolkatans the last lag of the wintry feel.

Even as the Met office expects the temperature to start rising by Monday, the mercury is likely to hover around the normal mark, hence keeping the weather pleasant.

Met officials said seasonally, the wintry vibe usually comes to a cease in the city by the second week of Feb.

"By Saturday, we can expect the minimum temperature to hover between 14°C and 15°C, while the maximum is likely to remain between 25°C and 26°C till Sunday. There will be a rising trend from Monday.

The mercury is likely to hover around the normal mark in the following five days. Hence, we expect the cold feeling, especially during late night and early mornings, to stay at least for a week," added Biswas. A series of western disturbances (WD) over the northwestern states had halted the entry of dry and cold northwesterly wind into the city. "Now, the northwesterly winds have started coming into our region. This will bring the maximum and minimum mercury levels down," said meteorologist HR Biswas, head at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. Met experts said a western disturbance is an extra-tropical storm, originating in the Mediterranean region.

This system can trigger sudden rain in winter in northwestern parts of India or bring snowfall in higher altitudes.

While it does not have a direct impact on the city, it can block the path of the northwesterly wind, which is crucial to bring in the cold factor.

With the re-arrival of the cold and dry wind system, both the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city started falling slightly below the normal mark, which stood at 27.1°C and 16.6 °C degrees respectively, on Thursday. This winter saw both the maximum and minimum temperatures plunging to record-breaking lows over the past decade at least.

January's maximum temperature of 18 degrees on Jan 6 is the month's lowest in a decade, while the minimum temperature of 10.2°C on the same day too is the month's lowest in a decade. Met officials said seasonally, the wintry vibe comes to a cease in the city by the 2nd week of Feb.
